Biography

I am a highly experienced freelance IT and business journalist and copywriter, specialising in business and technology features, case studies and news reports for the UK IT trade and business press for publications as mainstream as The Guardian, Revolution and Computer Weekly to specialist publications including CIO Connect magazine, Marketing Week, Communications News, World Telemedia magazine, and Drapers Record & Menswear.

I am well known and highly respected in my field, having covered the IT and telecoms industry for 15 years for a wide range of independent magazines, newspapers and Web portals, as well as for a wide range of large corporate clients, including the likes of Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, IBM, Hewlett Packard, BEA, 3Com, the Institute of Chartered Accountants, CIO-Connect, IDC, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young and the MCA. I also provide professional copywriting services to a series of marketing and PR agencies.

I have split down my credentials into three areas - journalism, corporate copywriting, and consumer writing. More details on each follow below:

1. JOURNALISM

Having spent 10 years in staff journalism jobs in London, including several years as managing editor of The VAR magazine at Reed Business Information, I am now freelance and write for a variety of mainstream and specialist magazines and newspapers. These include titles as diverse as The Guardian, Computer Weekly, Revolution, Marketing Week, Drapers Record & Menswear, Streaming Media Europe, Communications News and MicroScope.

As a freelancer, I cover a wide range of business, IT and telecoms related topics. To name but a few, this long list includes subjects as diverse as:

  1. Transformational change/making companies more agile and competitive
  2. Recruitment and staff retention issues, including training and staff motivation programmes
  3. Customer focus and customer retention, including CRM
and marketing issues, whether IT-related or not
  4. SME issues of all kinds (ie those affecting small businesses), IT-related and otherwise
  5. The IT and telecoms reseller market – challengers for VARs and systems integrators
  6. Most aspects of telecoms, from the mobile and wireless markets to IP VPNs
  7. Telemedia/Internet and mobile content
  8. Challenges facing CIOs/IT directors
  9. Systems integration/infrastructure issues
  10. Web services
  11. Disaster recovery, contingency planning and security
  12. E-banking/e-commerce/e-government
  13. Many vertical market issues, eg healthcare, financial services

I specialise in writing highly accessible copy for a non-technical, management-level audience.

I have also branched out into writing about international property investment, producing major reports on countries such as Latvia.

 2. CORPORATE COPYWRITING & OTHER PROFESSIONAL MEDIA SERVICES

A major aspect of my work today is the provision of professional copywriting services for both PR/marketing agencies and corporate clients, where I offer a rapid turnaround and competitive rates. I provide a complete service, from customer case studies and newsletters, white papers, press releases, internal and external promotional literature and Web content, to ghost-written opinion articles and advertorial material. Again, all subjects are considered - both IT and general business, and also more mainstream, consumer-related topics.

This work has included the ghost-writing of a major 80,000-word IT business book on behalf of Cap Gemini, as part of a book series organised by the Management Consultancies Association (MCA) which has been published internationally by Hodder & Stoughton. The book, written for a senior management audience on the subject of complex systems integration, is called Joined-Up Systems: Building the Integrated Business, written on behalf of senior Cap Gemini consultants Trevor Elliott and Dave Herbert. Other regular corporate clients include Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Hewlett Packard, 3Com, Cisco, Ideal Hardware, CIO-Connect and the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

I also take on other types of creative work, from organising conference programmes, to editing special publications and supplements and conducting industry research.

I have some excellent industry contacts and am highly comprehensive in my research. I've never been known to miss a deadline, and can turn excellent copy around at extremely short notice. I can provide excellent references for all aspects of my work. Several marketing agencies have now come to rely on me as an extension of their team, particularly for taking on 11th hour projects with seemingly impossible deadlines.

3. CONSUMER PRESS

Finally, I also write lifestyle articles for the consumer press, for publications as wide-ranging as The Times, Zing! magazine, www.babyworld.co.uk and France and Living France magazines.
